"Accent on Excellence" is an eight-part series designed
for all University support employees whose primary responsibilities
are other than clerical in nature. Featuring a learn-by-doing format,
the program focuses on developing mastery of the skills needed for
success on the job. The only fee is a one-time $45 departmental charge
for materials. Competencies in these areas are developed:
Effective Networking and Relationship Building: Learning
personal skills and behaviors that assist you in achieving networking
goals and formulating a personal action plan for developing your
networking skills.
Understanding Behavior Styles: By identifying and understanding
one's own behavioral style, the styles of others become easier
to define and understand.
Effective Interpersonal Communications: Improving communication
skills by focusing on the process of communication including the
effective delivery and reception of messages.
Creative Problem Solving and Successful Teamwork: Using
a "creative problem solving" model to solve simple and
complex workplace problems. Learning to pool talents, resources,
and information to improve productivity and improve team cooperation.
Managing Time/Managing Stress: Setting goals, identifying
objectives, and prioritizing tasks to accomplish more and reduce
the impact of job-related stressors.
Quality Customer Service: Identifying customers and discussing
how to improve the service they receive.
Electronic Communication Skills: Communicating effectively
when using "non-interpersonal" technology, such as telephones
and e-mail.
Business Communications: Improving the quality of written
communication, such as reports and letters, by focusing on grammar,
punctuation, and style.
